This cycling Hokkaido self-guided tour itinerary guides you through the famous rolling hills around Furano & Biei, often called “Hokkaido’s Tuscany”, where quiet country roads wind past colourful flower fields, peaceful lakes, and volcano views.

Designed for riders who want independence and freedom, this 6-day self-guided itinerary gives you the flexibility to cycle at your pace with detailed GPS routes and thoughtfully selected overnight stops. Along the way, you’ll enjoy scenic landscapes, local galleries and cafés, and traditional accommodations, including restorative onsen hot springs at the end of each day.

Day 1 - Furano to Minami Furano: Lake Kanayama & Countryside Roads

Roll through the outskirts of our base town, Furano, passing by cute cafes, farm shops and markets.  Head towards the scenic Lake Kanayama, formed from the Sorachi River and recognized as one of Japan’s 100 most beautiful dam lakes. Hug the northern shores of the lake until reaching the quaint town of Minami Furano, where you will rest for the night.

Day 2 - Farm Roads to Photo & Art Stops

Head northwards back towards Furano via a different route from yesterday, exploring the hidden side of the Sorachi valley.  Pass through small towns, marvel at panoramic views of the Daisetsuzan mountain range whilst winding up towards Naka Furano and Kami Furano.  Here you can enjoy galleries and cafes showcasing regional products.  Enjoy another night in the town of Furano.

Day 3 - Broad Plains & Quiet Country Linking Roads

Cruise through the titular “Rolling Hills” up towards Biei, voted one of Japan’s most beautiful villages.  Rippling rice fields and colorful flower fields are on each side, whilst you constantly marvel at the impressive backdrop of the Daisetsuzan mountains.  Drop by the famous Biei “Blue Pond” as you climb up through the foothills to reach the hot spring resort village of Shirogane, your home for the night.

Day 4 - Forest Paths & Lakeside Roads

After your relaxing spa experience, roll back down to Biei town, nestled in the valley.  You will swing northwards, through farms and verdant fields, skirting the Chubetsu Lake before beginning your climb to Asahidake Onsen.  Every hot spring has its unique blend of minerals and a traditional inn with stunning cuisine located in this dedicated mountain resort is your reward for reaching the base of the highest peak in Hokkaido.

Day 5 - Volcano Views & Asahidake Approaches

Take in the fresh air and stunning views from the top of the Asahidake Ropeway, where you’ll find a wooden walkway among the alpine flowers and steaming vents of this mountain of volcanic origin.

It’s a welcoming descent to Higashikawa, a small town famous for its photography, rice and craft shops.  Hug the cycle path along the Chubetsu River into Asahikawa, the second biggest city in Hokkaido and your home for the night.  Try our tea ceremony experience or pottery workshop before heading out on the town!

Day 6 - Final Loop: Rolling Landscapes Back Toward Furano

You’re heading back to Furano today which will complete your circular ride through the rolling hills and lush valleys of the area known as the “Tuscany of Hokkaido”.  Roll back down the cycle paths next to the Chubetsu River to reacquaint yourself with the town of Higashikawa before crossing over to the south side of the Biei Patchwork Hills.  Pass back through the now familiar vistas of Biei, Kami and Naka Furano; there is more than enough variety to discover something new!  Finish up your tour with our hosts in the friendly township of Furano.
