Riding Skills: Cornering Techniques on a Bike

Cornering Techniques: Line & Body Position

 A = centre of gravity (intersection of B & C)

B = gravity force

C = centrifugal force

  • Outside Pedal Down: Weight your outside foot completely straight down (at 6 o'clock position) to push tire side-knobs or rubber into the road for traction.

  • Brake Before, Not During: Do all your braking in a straight line before entering the turn. Braking while leaned over reduces grip and causes the bike to stand up straight.

  • Look Through the Turn: Your bike follows your eyes. Look where you want to exit, not at the curb or obstacle.

  • Wide – Apex – Wide: Take an outside-inside-outside line through turns to widen the radius and carry maximum momentum.
